⚪️ TARGET USERS

⚪️ OVERVIEW

International students face conflicts

International students living on U.S. campuses often experience conflicts with roommates due to differences in living habits, culture, and personality. This leads to increased stress, feelings of isolation, and challenges in building positive relationships, which can negatively impact their academic performance, and overall well-being.

Empower students with tools and habits

We believe in empowering students with practical tools and habits that enable them to thrive in shared living environments, helping them to succeed in any collaborative space or community.

⚪️ DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

Quick Start and Instant Access.

Dormbo offers a quick start guide and seamless school integration, allowing students to explore features and set up their profile in seconds.

Manage Tasks with Clarity and Accountability.

The to-do page shows tasks, requires roommate confirmation, and resets each cycle to ensure accountability.

Request and Offer Help with Ease.

Students can request help or take on tasks from roommates or the dorm, earning points to encourage collaboration and accountability.

Track Rankings and Earn Rewards

Students can track dorm rankings and personal performance, with points earned from tasks redeemable for rewards like dining dollars or campus store discounts.

⚪️ RESEARCH INSIGHTS

Have you ever faced disagreements with your roommate over things like cleanliness, noise, or clashing routines?

Left unresolved, these small conflicts can negatively affect both your living experience and academic success.

Sampling 31,500 students, it was found that 47.9%, had conflicts with their roommates or housemates.

Research Goal

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the overall experiences of international students living in the United States including contributions and challenges.

Some students also shared concerns about communication, and others shared frustration like roommates hosting late-night parties or not respecting privacy.

So, we found that students often feel disconnected from their roommates, and this disconnect can lead to conflicts.

Roommate Conflicts and Disconnection

We interviewed 12 participants and received 55 survey results. Students reported issues with communication, late-night parties, and lack of privacy.

Roommate

  1. How might we help international students ensure their efforts in shared responsibilities are recognized by their roommates to promote fair treatment?

  2. How might we help students learn to live with roommate who have different lifestyles to reduce conflict?

⚪️ DESIGN DECISIONS

Sensory Cue Test - Real user needs

Initially, we prioritized gamification—using visuals like two characters completing tasks in a room. However, users felt disconnected from this approach. We then conducted a Sensory Cue Test, allowing users to quickly and intuitively select images that resonated with their sense of fair treatment, belonging, and well-being.

(Initially gamification-centered design)

Test Question: The ideal experience in your dormitory room
  1. My ideal sense of belonging in the dormitory

  2. My ideal way to maintaining good health in the dormitory

  3. My ideal fair experience in the dormitory

Design Direction Shift

The test results made it clear that users didn’t want an overly gamified interface. As a result, we pivoted to a more straightforward task management design that directly addresses users’ real needs, marking a major strategic shift in our design direction.

We believe in empowering students with practical tools and habits that enable them to thrive in shared living environments, helping them to succeed in any collaborative space or community.

⚪️ WHAT DO USERS WANT?

User Goals

Based on our research, we used Maslow's hierarchy to categorize insights and identified 8 user needs. Focusing on the most essential, we selected three key user goals: fair treatment from roommates, a sense of belonging in the dorm, and maintaining good health.

Design Concept change

Initially, we explored three design concepts: an app for RAs to manage student conflicts, an optimized roommate selection form, and a dormitory task management system.

Ultimately, from a long-term perspective, we recognized the need to equip students with conflict resolution skills, ensure their contributions are acknowledged with fairness, and foster a deep sense of belonging for their long-term, holistic growth.

⚪️ DEISIGN CHALLENGE

Conducted two rounds of
usability testing

We conducted two rounds of user testing, including 10 participants, evolving from mid- to high-fidelity wireframes based on user feedback. To evaluate key themes—belonging, fairness, and well-being—we combined task flows into a holistic dorm management experience.

Clear Tasks, Stronger Engagement

The test result shows that some UX writing, the task mechanism, and the scientific rationale behind the four task colors on the homepage were confusing to users. Based on this feedback, we streamlined the task flow to make it more intuitive and integrated a rewards system and leaderboard to boost engagement and team cohesion.

System Transparency
Implemented a 3-step "Learn-Do-Reflect" framework reducing average task abandonment by 41%.

Motivation Engine
Developed a dual-incentive system blending:

  • Intrinsic Rewards: boost student motivation, enhance unity, and foster stronger team cohesion.

  • Extrinsic Motivators: Tiered achievement badges with campus partner perks
